This month’s Beauty Heroes Beauty Discovery features Honua Hawaiian Skincare. Hawaii is a place that I have always wanted to visit so I am super excited to now have my own little piece of the Hawaiian culture.

Kapua Browning, the founder of Honua Skincare was an esthetician for over 10 years in Honolulu before she started her line. She created small batches of healing skincare products using Hawaiian herbal botanicals and offered them apothecary style for her clients. Several years later, it grew into a brand.

Unfortunately, with Hawaii’s changing economy and high cost of living, Kapua and her family were forced to leave Hawaii and move to Northern California. Although this move was extremely difficult, Kapua calls it a “blessing in disguise” because she is now able to share the Hawaiian culture and the Aloha spirit in a new area. Kapua hopes to return to Hawaii in the future.

During my Beauty Discovery this month, I learned that “Honua” means “Earth” in Hawaiian which truly speaks to the sustainability of this line. With the significant loss of agricultural land and a growing focus on tourism, Honua Skincare works to create more land and less room for development by sourcing most of the ingredients from family farms on the islands of Hawaii.

The star product for the month of June is Honua’s Aloha Youth Serum. The base of this serum is organic coconut (Niu) water, rose (Loke) hydrosol and aloe that is fortified with strengthening and cell renewing hibiscus (Aloalo), anti-aging and brighting noni and turmeric (‘Ōlena), inflammation reducing kava kava (‘Awa) and skin-regenerating comfrey. Oils of kukui, tamanu (Kamani) and chia are whipped together with a hint of heart-opening ylang ylang to inspire Aloha vibes.

This month’s sidekick is the ‘Ōlena, Hawaiian Tumeric Beauty Oil. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, this oil can be used to treat skin conditions like sun damage, eczema and acne. A blend of ancient Hawaiian plant oils of kukui and kamani help nourish and feed the skin and promote elasticity. The antioxidant rich cacao will leave you with brighter and more supple skin.
